Chapter Thirteen

She stared at the text message. Was he joking or was he for real?

See you in an hour.

How would he get to her? Plane, train, or automobile?

He had to be joking. She put her phone down then turned the volume back up on her television. She was watching some competitive dance show. She wasn’t a dancer and had never been, but that didn’t stop her from enjoying everyone else’s sense of rhythm.

Her phone chimed with an incoming text message. She grinned to herself.

See you in an hour. Ha! Yeah right. She let out a chuckle. It was probably Ramsey texting back letting her know that he’d been joking.

She picked up her phone. The number wasn’t the one that Ramsey had texted her from and the one that she’d stored in her phone. This one was from Alex.

What’s up?

Nothing. Watching TV. What’s up with you?

Nothing. I got work reduced and got to leave early.

Sweet.

You have candy in your work mailbox.

Candy? From who?

Mandy. From her trip to Mexico.

Oh, thanks for letting me know. I’ll get it when I get back from my vacation.

When’s that?

Four more days.

I can drop it by tonight.

Dani surveyed her current outfit of choice. Cut off sweatpants and a workout shirt. To the untrained eye it might appear as though she was about to play a rousing game of flag football, but she actually had on her favorite pajamas. Visitors didn’t need to see her dressed like this, no matter if it was only a coworker. She looked like a ragamuffin. Not to mention her hair was still wet from her shower and hung in clumps around her.

Besides, since when did Alex drop candy off at her house? How did he even know where she lived? Well, that’s two men who have my address without me telling them. I should really do an internet search on myself to find out what’s out there.

Alex was her work friend only. Sometimes they’d exchanged days to help accommodate time off, but they’d never hung out or seen each other outside of work.

Alex contacting her in NOLA was weird. But now it was just super-duper weird.

No thanks. I’ve been eating like a pig in NOLA. I think that I should let my stomach settle before eating Mexican candy.

Are you sure? I’m not far from you.

From what she remembered about him, he didn’t live anywhere near her.

Thanks, but no thanks. I’m beat. See you at work.

Guess what? I checked the schedule and we have a three day stretch together. I guess you can tell me all about your trip then.

Sure. See you then.

That was odd.

She buried her fingers in Libby’s fur and scratched her back. Libby flipped to her stomach and sprawled out.

“You’re so spoiled,” she said with a chuckle as she obliged and went back to watching her show.

Forty-five minutes later a knock sounded on her front door. Libby jumped from the couch in a single bound. Her nails skittered across the wood floor as she ran toward the door in a barking frenzy.
